DNV Witnessed Fire Test, API 607 Sixth Edition

A fire test is a design statement, not a paperwork exercise. The certificate only means anything with its scope attached.

01 / OVERVIEW

DNV Witnessed Fire Test, API 607 Sixth Edition

The fire test on file was witnessed by DNV in Shanghai and carried out to the sixth edition of API STD 607. The valve tested was an eight-inch Class 600 trunnion-mounted ball valve with RF flanged ends in A105.

The important part of the document is not the pass but the scope. The result qualifies NPS 8 and above at Class 600, 800 and 900, which is the statement a project can actually use.

What was tested and why that size

The fire test is destructive, so it can only be carried out on one valve of a design family. The choice of the eight-inch Class 600 trunnion as the sample follows from the service the design is intended for: pipeline and terminal duty at larger bore and higher class.

Testing the largest and most heavily loaded member of the family is the conservative route, which is why the qualified scope extends upward from the tested size rather than covering the whole catalogue.

What the test proves

The valve was pressurised, exposed to fire conditions, cooled, then operated and re-tested with the soft parts consumed. Passing means the design has a secondary sealing path that works without the polymer seat.

On a trunnion ball valve that path comes from the metal-to-metal secondary seat and from sealing arrangements that do not depend on the polymer. It is a geometry decision made at the drawing stage.

How a buyer uses it

The useful questions are: which valve in my order does this certificate speak for, and does the scope cover the size and class I am buying? For this record, an NPS 8 Class 600 trunnion is squarely inside the scope, and a smaller ball valve in a different construction is not.

A separate ECM certificate, 1N230925.ZTVCD94, covers a two-inch ball valve. Where a project needs a fire qualification outside the covered range, the honest answer is that it has to be tested, not that the existing certificate can be stretched over it.

Questions this page answers

It states which sizes and classes the tested result is judged to cover. The certificate is issued for a defined range, and a valve outside that range is not covered by it.

Because the fire test is destructive and only one sample can be used. Testing the most heavily loaded member makes the result conservative for the rest of the qualified range.

Yes. It is listed with its number on the certificates page, along with the API 6D, CE, ATEX and ISO documents.
