Pipeline Flow Velocity & Erosion Safety Meter
Line velocity governs hydraulic erosion, acoustic noise, and dynamic pressure drop. Sanity check your nominal bore against process flow rate.
Pressure Units

Nominal Size & Bore
ASME B36.10M / ISO 6708Temperature
Cryogenic to Superheated SteamMaterials Threshold: At -46°C, ASTM A352 LCC/LCB is required. Below -101°C down to -196°C (LNG), austenitic CF8M with extended bonnets is required. Above 425°C, A217 WC6/WC9 Chrome-Moly prevents graphitization.
Volumetric Flow Rate
Liquid & Gas TransmissionWhere Valve Unit Conversions Cause Costly Errors
1. Nominal NPS vs Actual Internal Bore
A 4" valve is not 101.6 mm ID. On Schedule 40 pipe, actual inside diameter is 102.3 mm; on Schedule 80, it is 97.2 mm; on Class 2500 heavy wall, it can drop to 79.4 mm. When calculating line velocity and flow Cv, always base calculations on actual bore rather than nominal designation.
2. Pressure Class vs Working Gauge Bar
Class 150 does not mean 150 psi (10.3 bar). At ambient temperature (38°C), an ASME B16.34 Class 150 WCB valve has a maximum allowable working pressure of 19.6 bar (285 psi). At 300°C, that same rating drops to 10.2 bar. Always state design temperature alongside operating pressure.
3. Gas Density & Temperature Base Conditions
Normal cubic meters (Nm³/h, referenced at 0°C and 1.013 bar a) differ from Standard cubic feet (scfh, referenced at 60°F and 14.696 psia). In IEC 60534 control valve sizing, failure to specify base condition generates up to 7% error in Cv selection.
